The HBAPA is thrilled to congratulate Jacqueline C. Romero, Esq. on her nomination by President Biden to become the next U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania! We are extremely proud that a former HBAPA President (2018) and one of our of most active members has been entrusted to lead such an important legal institution in our Commonwealth. We are confident that her legal acumen, integrity, and passion for justice will be a credit to her in this new role.
Ms. Romero has dedicated her career to public service and has served the past 16 years as an Assistant United States Attorney for the United States Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of Pennsylvania (USAO-EDPA). She has been the Civil Rights Coordinator for the USAO-EDPA since 2015 and oversees all civil rights investigations and initiatives in the nine counties that make up the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Her duties also include the Affirmative Civil Enforcement Strike Force, Federal Reentry Court, Philadelphia Youth Court, and the Hiring Committee.
As a first-generation college student, Ms. Romero overcame multiple obstacles in navigating her path to becoming an attorney. The granddaughter of Spanish immigrants, she was raised working in her parents’ diner in New Jersey, where at a young age she developed an interest in politics and current events, which later developed into a passion for law and advocacy. Ms. Romero is a trailblazer in her own right as further evidenced by her nomination. She is the first woman to be nominated by the White House for the position of U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and her confirmation would also make her the first woman of color to hold that office.
We are grateful to Senators Bob Casey and Pat Toomey for working together to recommend Ms. Romero to the White House and for highlighting, in their bipartisan announcement of her nomination, that she possesses the intelligence, legal experience, independence and unquestioned honesty and integrity necessary to lead the U.S. Justice Department in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
